The case went cold for 25 years. In November 2020, Johnny Dwight Whited, a Trinity, Alabama, man dying of stage-four lung cancer, telephoned the Decatur Police Department and confessed to the killing, providing details about the crime scene that detectives said only the killer or crime-scene technicians could have known. Whited was charged with murder and indicted in March 2022, but he died of his cancer in June 2022 before the case could go to trial, and the charge was dismissed.
How it was solved
For 25 years the killing of Christopher Dailey sat unsolved in Decatur and Morgan County, Alabama. The break came not from forensic science but from the killer himself. In November 2020, Johnny Dwight Whited, terminally ill with stage-four lung cancer, called the Decatur Police Department and said he wanted to confess to a murder he had committed years earlier. Detective Sean Mukaddam met with Whited, who reenacted the crime and supplied corroborating specifics about how Dailey was shot and how the victim's car had been driven into the Tennessee River with a rock tied to the accelerator. Mukaddam said Whited gave him details that only crime-scene technicians would have known, apologized repeatedly, and appeared to have carried the burden for a long time. Whited and Dailey had not known each other before the killing. Police charged Whited with murder, and a Morgan County grand jury indicted him in March 2022. He died of lung cancer in late June 2022 before trial, and the murder charge was dismissed in early July 2022.
