The murder of Crystal Rogers
Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky · 2015
Overview
Crystal Rogers, a 35-year-old mother of five from Bardstown, Kentucky, was last seen on the evening of July 3, 2015, at the farm owned by the family of her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, where the couple had gone with their two-year-old son. Houck said she was home playing on her phone when he went to bed and gone when he woke; he did not report her missing. Her mother did, on July 5, the day her maroon Chevrolet Impala was found on the Bluegrass Parkway with a flat tire, the keys in the ignition and her purse and phone inside. The Nelson County sheriff named Houck a suspect that October and said he believed Rogers was dead; Houck's brother, a Bardstown police officer, was fired the same day for interfering. In November 2016 her father, Tommy Ballard, was shot dead while hunting; that killing is unsolved. The FBI took over in 2020, searched the farm and a subdivision Houck had built. A 13-second call to Houck at 12:07 a.m. on July 4, 2015, from an employee, Steve Lawson, and cell data placing Lawson near where the Impala was found became the spine of a circumstantial case. Houck was indicted and arrested in September 2023 with Lawson's son Joseph; Steve Lawson was charged that December. All three were convicted in Bowling Green in 2025. Houck was found guilty of murder as principal or accomplice on July 8, 2025, and sentenced to life on September 17, 2025. Rogers' body has never been found.
How it was solved
There was no body, no crime scene and no weapon. The case against Brooks Houck was built by reinvestigation. In July 2015 Nelson County Sheriff's detective Jon Snow found a 13-second call to Houck at 12:07 a.m. on July 4 from Steve Lawson, a man who worked for him; Houck said it was about rental properties. Sheriff Ed Mattingly named Houck a suspect in October 2015, but no one was charged. In the summer of 2020 the FBI became lead agency with more than 150 officers; agents searched the Houck farm in 2020 and in 2021 tore up a driveway in a subdivision Houck's company built. In 2022 Hardin County Commonwealth's Attorney Shane Young was appointed special prosecutor. An FBI analysis of Steve Lawson's phone placed him near the mile marker where Rogers' Impala was found, and showed his son Joseph had called him repeatedly before Lawson made the 13-second call to Houck. Prosecutors argued the Lawsons were disposing of the car to make it look as if Rogers had left, that Joseph got a flat tire, and that the resulting phone call was the one hiccup in the plan. Young told NBC's Dateline that without the flat tire the case probably would not have been solved. Steve Lawson eventually admitted he had been on the parkway and said he moved the driver's seat forward because his son was taller than Rogers. A longtime Houck employee testified that Houck's mother had asked him, weeks before the disappearance, how to get rid of Rogers; a former girlfriend of Steve Lawson testified she overheard the Lawsons talk about moving a body at the Houck farm with a skid steer; a neighbor described Houck's mother and brother carrying bags between vehicles and digging up Rogers' flowers in the days after. Video and Houck's own phone data contradicted his timeline. Joseph Lawson and Houck were indicted in September 2023 and Steve Lawson that December. Bowling Green juries convicted Steve Lawson on May 30, 2025, and, after a ten-day trial with 41 prosecution witnesses, Houck and Joseph Lawson on July 8, 2025, within hours.
