Overview
On April 20, 2002, 28-year-old Stephen Lindsey was found shot once in the head, slumped over the wheel of a Chevrolet van in the parking lot of the former Red Roof Inn on Rothrock Road in Copley Township, Ohio. Copley police identified a prime suspect within their investigation, a 20-year-old man named Neil Anderson, but with no eyewitness and no direct physical evidence tying him to the killing, the case went cold for more than two decades. It was not DNA or new forensics that finally closed it. In March 2023, while dying of a terminal illness, Anderson confessed to his brother that he had shot Lindsey rather than repay a debt he owed him. The brother carried the secret for roughly a year and a half before bringing it to police in November 2024, supplying details investigators said only the killer or the police could have known. With those details matching the original crime scene, detectives declared the case solved and officially closed it more than 22 years after the murder.
How it was solved
The break came entirely through a person coming forward, not through forensic science. During the 2002 investigation Copley detectives interviewed dozens of people and traveled to other states, and they came to regard Neil Anderson as their prime suspect, but Detective Mike Yovanno said they lacked an eyewitness and direct physical evidence and could not bring charges. The case stalled. Anderson was never tried. The decisive moment arrived in March 2023 when Anderson, facing a terminal illness, confessed to his brother that he had shot Lindsey instead of paying back money he owed him. The brother sat with the secret for about a year and a half, saying he wanted to spare his family further anguish, before reporting the confession to Copley police in November 2024. According to Yovanno, the brother relayed details that matched the evidence at the crime scene, information that only the killer or the police would know. That corroboration allowed investigators to close the case. The brother died in December 2024, about a month after meeting with police. Anderson, who had died in 2023 at age 41, was never charged or convicted, but police said they are confident he committed the murder and the case is now labeled solved.
