Overview

On the afternoon of Monday, October 22, 1962, nine-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty, a fifth-grader at St. Mark Catholic School in Bristol, Pennsylvania, rode her bicycle toward the library and stopped at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church. Her father found her there, in the choir loft area, when she had not come home by half past four. Investigators determined she had been raped and strangled. Bristol police and the Pennsylvania State Police found hairs in her hand and pursued several suspects, among them a handyman whose confession was later admitted to be coerced. A neighbor's tip in January 1963 led to William Schrader, a local factory worker, whose alibi was contradicted by his time card. He left Pennsylvania soon after. A 1992 newspaper series prompted a reinvestigation, and in 1994 Schrader, extradited from the South, invoked the Fifth Amendment before a grand jury. He died in 2002. In November 2024 Bucks County investigators and State Police interviewed Schrader's stepson, who described two confessions he had earlier reported to Louisiana authorities. On October 29, 2025, District Attorney Jennifer Schorn announced that a grand jury had concluded Schrader alone was responsible. He was never charged.

How it was solved

This was solved by a relative's account of a confession, set beside eyewitness and physical evidence the original investigators had already gathered. In January 1963 a citizen's tip led police to William Schrader, a 24-year-old who lived a block and a half from the church. He told police he was at work on October 22, but his time card showed he had left on October 19 and not returned until October 24. Prosecutors said he lied about his alibi, gave a hair sample and soon left for Florida, then Texas and Louisiana. Accounts differ on whether he passed or failed a polygraph. A 1992 Courier Times series led Bristol police to reopen the file; in 1994 Schrader was extradited and, before a grand jury, invoked the Fifth Amendment. A 1993 comparison, as described by prosecutors in 2025, found significant similarities between his hair sample and hair clutched in Carol Ann's hand; of 141 men tested over the decades, only he could not be eliminated. A 2012 newspaper column noted that some original investigators doubted the hair evidence. Schrader died in 2002. Prosecutors said a relative told Louisiana authorities that Schrader had confessed, but the account never reached Pennsylvania. In 2024 the State Police and the district attorney arranged DNA testing of the old hairs, which Schorn warned were badly degraded; none of the 2025 coverage says DNA identified Schrader. In November 2024 Bucks County investigators and State Police interviewed Schrader's stepson, who said Schrader confessed twice to killing a girl in a Pennsylvania church to keep her from talking. A grand jury found him credible because he had no prior knowledge of the case's details, ruled out the other early suspects, and on October 29, 2025 was announced to have concluded that Schrader alone was responsible.
