Overview
JonBenét Ramsey, age 6, was reported missing from her family's home in the 700 block of 15th Street in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996, after her mother found a lengthy handwritten ransom note and called police at 5:52 a.m. Hours later her father discovered her body in the basement of the house. An autopsy attributed her death to asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma. The killing was never solved, and DNA evidence later led the Boulder District Attorney to publicly exclude her parents and brother as suspects in 2008.
Where it stands
The case remains officially unsolved and open. In December 2003 investigators developed a DNA profile from JonBenét's clothing that belonged to an unknown male and excluded the Ramseys, and on July 9, 2008 Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy publicly stated that her office did not consider any member of the Ramsey family a suspect, writing the family a letter of apology. A 1999 grand jury had voted to indict the parents on a child-abuse charge, but District Attorney Alex Hunter declined to sign it for insufficient evidence; those documents were unsealed in 2013. The Boulder Police Department continues to describe the investigation as active and a priority, and in its December 2025 annual update reported conducting new interviews and testing and re-testing evidence with evolving DNA technology.

Patsy Ramsey, who made the 911 call, was among the family members long the focus of public and investigative suspicion; a 1999 grand jury voted to indict her and John Ramsey on a charge of child abuse resulting in death, but the DA declined to prosecute. She was formally excluded as a suspect by the Boulder DA in 2008 based on DNA, and she died of ovarian cancer in 2006.[1]
