For a decade, women who vanished while hitchhiking or driving the back roads of the New Hampshire–Vermont border turned up stabbed in the woods, killed by a man no one ever identified.
Overview
The Connecticut River Valley Killer is the name given to an unidentified serial killer believed responsible for at least seven murders of women in the Connecticut River Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont between 1978 and 1988. The victims, found within roughly a fifty-mile radius near the New Hampshire–Vermont border, were all stabbed, and several had last been seen in or near Claremont, New Hampshire. The only known survivor, a pregnant woman attacked in West Swanzey in August 1988, was stabbed 27 times and lived to provide a composite sketch. No one has ever been charged, and the murders remain officially unsolved.
Where it stands
The case remains officially unsolved with no arrests or convictions, according to Wikipedia and New England news reporting. A private investigator, with support from a criminal profiler, proposed a now-deceased man as a possible suspect, but he was never conclusively linked to the killings and survivor accounts cast doubt on the theory. On May 21, 2024, the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit, the state Department of Justice, the State Police Major Crime Unit, and the Claremont and Newport police departments searched a property in Newport, New Hampshire; per the Valley News, the Attorney General's Office said the effort showed the state's dedication to investigating unresolved cases while cautioning against drawing conclusions from it. No charges have resulted.

Around 2006, private investigator Lynn-Marie Carty proposed Michael Nicholaou as a possible suspect, a theory supported by criminal profiler John Philpin. Nicholaou died by suicide on December 31, 2005, after shooting his estranged wife and stepdaughter in Florida. He was never conclusively linked to the killings, no charges were filed, and the survivor of the 1988 attack has said she does not believe he was her attacker.[5]

On May 21, 2024, investigators searched a Newport property and seized items including antique swords and knives; the living owner has not been charged with any crime, and the Attorney General's Office cautioned against drawing conclusions from the search.[3]
